This edition of Tales from the Canyons of the Damned consists of three stand alone short stories. Two from Daniel Arthur Smith and one from Bob Williams.

In the first story TESLA performs an experiment to prove he can provide electric WI FI to the world. In the BLUE ORB we learn the result of that century old Shoreham test.
Then a BONUS story from Bob Williams.
Looking to get in out of a brutally cold night Daniel enters the club "SMOKE." What he discovers within will force him to make his greatest decision.

Tales from the Canyons of the Damned No 2 eBook Daniel Arthur Smith Bob Williams

This collection brings us two shorts by Daniel Arthur Smith and one tale written by Bob Williams.

The first two stories - "Tesla" and "The Blue Orb" - are tied together, showing us how a failed experiment in 1904 leads to events that take place in New York in 2015. And as we learn, perhaps the experiment didn't fail after all...

Readers will be happy to learn that these two stories by Daniel Arthur Smith build upon the events we've already read about in TOWER as well as the first volume of TALES FROM THE CANYONS OF THE DAMNED, and give a better understanding of what happened on that horrid day.

The final story is "Smoke" by Bob Williams. This is a very short stand-alone piece that gives us an alternative destination when our travels are over. Even though this is short, it's a nice, complete read.

Tales from the Canyons of the Damned No 2 eBook Daniel Arthur Smith Bob Williams Reviews

Back in the old days, before the Internet and even before television, pulp horror magazines like "Weird Tales" gave many readers their first glimpse at soon-to-become masters of horror, science fiction, and fantasy like H.P. Lovecraft, August Derleth, Robert E. Howard, and Robert Bloch. Today, traditional magazines of that sort are pretty much a dying breed, but a new generation of digital magazines featuring up-and-coming new writers seems well placed to replace the pulps with horror and sci fi fans. Among these digital magazines is "Tales from the Canyons of the Damned," a monthly series that's now up to some 20 issues, available separately on or in various omnibus editions. This second issue of the series picks up on an interconnected group of stories written by the magazine’s editor, Daniel Arthur Smith and is a bit more self-contained than the stories in the first issue were.

In the first issue of “Canyons,” Smith presented several brief scenes involving people in modern day New York City who were under attack by … something (Smith was deliberately vague about just what that something was). This second issue goes back in time a century to show the origins of that mysterious something. In the first story, “Tesla,” the famed inventor Nikola Tesla creates a device that can sent a bolt of electrical current several miles away. In the second story, “The Blue Orb,” the results of Tesla’s experiment reveal themselves in the present day when the great-great-grandson of Tesla’s assistant goes to the top of the Empire State Building to prepare for a heck of a fireworks show. It seems that the Tesla’s invention opened some kind of dimensional rift that, when combined with a magical ritual the great-great grandson performs, allows an entry into our world by … something.

It’s clear from these two stories that Smith was influenced by H.P. Lovecraft, and the combination of interdimensional portals and magical rituals in these stories calls to mind the beings that were a vital part of Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Of course, after only five stories in two issues of a magazine, the extent of Smith’s other dimension and the beings that inhabit it are nowhere near as well formed as the creations that Lovecraft worked on his entire career. But still, the question isn’t how good Smith’s entire saga might be, but, rather, how good these two stories are and, more important, if they justify a potential reader spending the money on them.

The answer depends on what readers are expecting in a single issue of “Canyons of the Damned.” Judged on their own, these two stories, like the ones in the first issue, are mere scenes, with a giant cliffhanger at the end of “The Blue Orb” that is only to a minor extent resolved by the three stories in the first issue. Smith is quite a descriptive writher and he artfully conveys some rather gruesome goings on at the Empire State Building observation deck, so fans of the macabre may enjoy the imagery but may still feel a letdown at the end.

Fortunately for all potential readers, Smith includes another story in this second issue that is not part of his personal fictional interdimensional universe. That story is “Smoke,” written by another author, Bob Williams. “Smoke” is a standalone story, having nothing to do with Smith’s tales other than falling into the same broad category of fantasy. The “Smoke” referred to in the title is a night club that a young man considers paying a visit to. Not surprisingly, there’s more to the place than gin and jazz music. “Smoke” is an excellent piece of flash fiction, written by an author who can deftly create a mood with a few well-chosen words.

This second issue of “Canyons of the Damned” is a distinct improvement over the first, primarily for the inclusion of “Smoke,” well worth a read on its own. Not only is “Smoke” an excellent story, but it signifies the intent by Daniel Smith as editor to make “Canyons of the Damned” more than a serialized, version of his own saga, chopped into pieces and reassembled. This issue has a true anthology feel to it, with varying authorial styles and voices. I still have problems with Smith the writer’s chosen method of storytelling, but these canyons are well worth a visit by horror and fantasy fans.
Currently there are 6 volumes and the first 5 have been re-released together.

Fun reading
I like these short serialized stories, they have potential. I just hope there will be story for the stories.
What's the point of these stories? I have no answer, but this is the only one of these collections for me.
I was excited to see this series continues! It's an intriguing set of stories.
I must say I enjoyed Canyons #1 "Beware the Mist" much better than this next installment. These are pretty good short stories but were different in tone and subject matter. In "Beware the Mist" the theme was hideous monstrosities lurking just beyond perception in the mist. There really was not a theme to these three stories. "Tesla" paints a great picture of the pioneer but I wouldn't call it a horror tale. "Smoke" explores the afterlife a tad and "Blue Orb" explores something, what I am not sure. Still, looking forward to Canyons three.
