Riding It Like It Is

Everybody's got an opinion. When it comes to Walt Disney World attractions, those opinions approach dogma. But what do the cast members think? Surely they have some special insight? Former cast member Arielle Tuan has ridden the rides and now she lays it on the line.

Arielle's Adventures! Many guidebooks tell you about the ride—the height requirement, how long it lasts, and other facts you can find anywhere. Arielle turns each of her ride experiences into an adventure, a mini-story about the queue, other cast members and guests, and of course the ride itself, start to finish.

Arielle's Advice! Drawing on her cast member insight and knowledge, Arielle offers advice for making the most of each ride, and for avoiding the pitfalls and misconceptions that plague both newcomers and seasoned theme park visitors alike.

You and Arielle will pull down the safety harness on such E-ticket rides as Pirates of the Caribbean, DINOSAUR, the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and Tower of Terror, as well as a sampling of Walt Disney World parades and shows.

Plus, a special chapter on Disneyland!

Totally Biased Ride Reviews Adventures and Advice from a Former Walt Disney World Cast Member eBook Arielle Tuan Bob McLain

Totally Biased Ride Reviews: Adventure and Advice from a Former Walt Disney Cast Member by Arielle Tuan offers a fresh and entertaining perspective on theme park rides. Tuan’s reviews are peppered with insider nuggets, amusing anecdotes, and Disney lore.
For Tuan, Disney rides are often a family affair and her sharing experiences with relatives and friends adds a layer of companionship to the entire book. She is especially good at recognizing the ways Disney evokes nostalgia in unexpected places, like the old-fashioned harkening of midway games at the high-tech Toy Story Mania. Totally Biased Ride Reviews conveys a sensibility that acknowledges how Disney creates fantastic illusions, yet understands that drawing back the curtains to reveal some of the manipulations and artistry can actually enhance the ride experience. As Tuan explains about the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, “If you look closely, you can see the puppeteers dressed in black moving about the stage. Rather than ruining the magic, I love watching them work.”
Totally Biased Ride Reviews is also filled little details that will heighten the rider’s awareness of the subtle touches that characterize the better attractions. Whether Tuan takes the reader through Pirates of the Caribbean (“Keep an eye out for the singing, murderous mermaids at the beginning of the ride, before the drop. You can see a glimpse of their silhouettes below the water”) or the Haunted Mansion (“Make sure you keep an eye out for the shadow of the invisible piano player on the ground – it’s a neat effect I never noticed until my friend, who did the cast member tour, pointed it out”), she offers new wrinkles for riding the venerable attractions. On a more practical level, Tuan also guides the reader, everything from where to get 100,000 points on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (shoot at the top of the volcano) to avoid wearing a short dress on Space Mountain.
Although Tuan is a diehard Disney fan, she is simultaneously clear-eyed in her assessments. Describing the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, she concludes, “I love Disney, but I stand by my beliefs that Escape from Gringotts over at Universal kicks the sweet little Mine Train’s ass.” And about the lines at Big Thunder Railroad: “The queue is also filled with gags and interactive elements, but it doesn’t make long wait times any less bearable.”
Throughout Totally Biased Ride Reviews, the attraction commentaries are punctuated by clever little italicized breaks with pithy citations from the given ride, such as “First the wind, and now this.” Tuan has given the reader much to enjoy here, and I know that my next trip to Disney will be enriched from her fine advice.

Quick read about Disney rides. Arielle is a former cast member and knows her stuff but this should be taken as an appetizer of a book--not a main course.
